South Dakota is usually known for its natural beauty, historic destinations, and for the large motorcycle rally that takes place every year in Sturgis.

However, South Dakota casinos must also be acknowledged as a source that attracts the attention of many tourists each year. Additionally, South Dakota is home to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Black Hills National Forest, and the Crazy Horse Memorial.

South Dakota has six Indian Reservations including the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation and the Crow Creek Indian Reservation and the third largest population of Native Americans in the country, making it an ideal destination for people who wish to learn more about Native American culture.

The capital city, Pierre, was founded as a fur trading post in 1817. The historic Lewis and Clark Trail also runs through the state. These, however, are not the only tourist destinations that this state has to offer. South Dakota is home to a number of casinos of all different sizes dispersed throughout the state both on Indian reservations and off.

Several South Dakota cities offer gaming to both residents and tourists. South Dakota Casinos and gambling are offered in Aberdeen, Deadwood, Eagle Butte, Flandreau, Fort Thompson, Huron, Lower Brule, McLaughlin, Mobridge, Pickstown, Pine Ridge, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Sisseton, Spearfish, Valentine, and Watertown. Most of these towns have just one or two small South Dakota casinos.

The South Dakota town with the most casinos is Deadwood, which features 20 South Dakota casinos including the Silverado and the Tin Lizzie. Casinos in Deadwood range in size from one-room operations with a handful of slot machines featuring live music, restaurants and hotel rooms, as well as the full range of gambling activities. Therefore, Deadwood is considered to be the major destination for people looking to gamble in South Dakota Casinos.

Indian reservations are also a major destination for people looking for casinos in South Dakota. Like many of the small gambling towns in South Dakota, they generally only have one or two casinos in a given town. However, those casinos are usually large with lots of slot machines and table games as well as restaurants and hotel rooms.

And many Indian reservation casinos are open 24 hours, including Prairie Wind Casino in Pine Ridge on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and the Grand River Casino and Resort in Mobridge on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation.

The exodus of qualified college students in South Dakota has reached such proportion that it set up a special program, the Dakota Corp., to address many of its most critical needs, such as educational and medical occupations. This doesn’t mean it covers everything, though. As it happens, the state and private organizations have also stepped in to help. For starters, all qualified students should look at the state’s version of the Robert C. Byrd Honors Program. To qualify for this national scholarship fund, high school students should have a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and have scored at least a 30 on their ACT. They must also be planning to attend an academic university. If qualified, the student will receive a renewable scholarship of $1,500 per year to any school in the U.S.

There are also a few organizations that may not be national, but do cover as much as a half-dozen or so of the greater Northwestern states, including South Dakota. For starters, there is the Drug & Alcohol Abuse Prevention Essay Contest. To qualify, a secondary school student needs to have a 2.5 GPA. He/she also must complete an essay on drug abuse. It will be published in a major anti-drug magazine, to which the recipient gets $500. Another such organization is the Minnesota Territorial Pioneers. Unlike many such private organizations, it doesn’t require membership. Applicants should only live in what was considered the old Minnesota Territories (both Dakotas are) in 12th grade and provide proof of acceptance to a college. It also requires an essay and awards $500.

An interesting program is the Marlin R. Scarborough Memorial Scholarship. Each year, all the colleges in South Dakota elect their top sophomores and enter them into the competition. Prerequisites include the student does plan to be a junior and carries a 3.5 grade point average. From there, the Board of Regents will award the qualified student $1,000. The state’s Better Business Bureau has also stepped into the fray. It created the Scott Mecham BBB Student of Integrity Awards and also covers the states of Nebraska and parts of Iowa. Each year, six students are awarded $2,000 each for representing the values of the late Mecham. They must be high school juniors. Grades and ethnicity are not considered.

South Dakota walleye fishing, as well as in North Dakota, is a bit difficult at first because there are certain hotspots where you’ll find these deepwater predators, while many other areas will seem to be completely uninhabited by the fish. Knowing how to target them and where they will be during a giving season will make your South Dakota walleye fishing trip a lot more fun and fruitful.

First of all, know that, in the dead of winter, walleye will prefer to feed around sundown, so this will give you an idea of when you want to be at the lake with your bait in the water for feeding time. This time of day causes the temperatures to drop considerably, and walleye have a penchant for cold waters. Especially if you are an ice fisherman, you’ll find that this time of year and this time of day bring the utmost excitement to your life, knowing that your best opportunity to reel in a monster is at hand.

In South Dakota, walleye fishing is best found on smaller waters and natural lakes, such as Devils Lake. Get out to this location just after the lake freezes for the best opportunity. However, you can certainly find walleye here throughout the winter, with some sized up to nine pounds and more, large for the species any way you look at it. Beside being sure to get to the lakes at the right time, you should be aware that a good bait presentation can make all the difference in the world. Some of the top anglers in South Dakota will use a lure without any bait and jig it. However, minnow seem to provide the best approach, using the head just off the bottom of the lake.

One trick to finding your catches is to stay at one hole, looking for the aggressive fish, using the dead stick method. This means keeping the bait completely still and waiting for the walleye to bite after staring it down. In this case, you might want to tip a lure with either a full minnow or a minnow head, using something like a small slip-bobber with a plain gold hook. Other anglers take the opposite approach to fishing, opening and fishing many holes. The biggest problem with this method is that it’s like playing sports, and the physical aspect of it can wear you down quickly. It can also be frustrating if you drill several holes with absolutely no luck.

The word powwow was not originally used by the Native Americans. All tribes have their own word for this type of gathering, of course, but just as an example the Dakota Sioux call the gathering a Wacipi (pronounced Wa chee pee), meaning dances. There are some very good dances at Reservations throughout South Dakota. Places like the Crow Creek Reservation, the Lower Brule, Sisseton, Pine Ridge, and the Rose Bud Reservation-to name a few-hold annual powwows or wacipi. The Crow Creek Reservation is near Chamberlain SD bordering the Missouri River. The river is really beautiful in that area and one can take a scenic drive along the river all the way to Pierre (the state capitol of South Dakota). The people who live at Crow Creek are some of the most friendly people I have ever met. The area is one of the poorest counties in the United States but the tribe still manages to host their own free Wacipi (powwow) every year.

Powwows begin on a Friday and end on a Sunday-normally allowing three whole days of interesting drum-pounding fun. Usually there is a parade for the opening day and the opening ceremonies at the arena begin with all the people who will dance entering the arena in their respective groups and categories. There is even a group of veterans and an honorary veterans’ ceremony held at each Wacipi. Each time the powwow breaks for lunch or dinner there is a new grand entry upon returning to the arena. Free lunch and dinner is provided for the guests who attend the powwow. Some of the finest Indian fry-bread you will ever eat is served with the meals. Somehow, no matter how many people show up, there is always enough food for everyone and all seem to enjoy the powwow meals. Vendors also provide a variety of food for sale for those who want to sample the Indian tacos, hamburgers, roasted corn, and other items. There are plenty of drinks such as fresh squeezed lemonade or free coffee at the powwows.

When traveling in South Dakota, you will find wide-open spaces. Adventures can still be found when traveling through the badlands, and you’ll come out safe and sound unlike the old days. There are many beautiful stone both above and below ground. You can stand on the ground last stand of Custer and have an understanding of the history of our country.

There is a reason all the bikers visit Spearhead each year you will find the drive wide open and beautiful. The scenic highway through Spearhead Canyon is one that is not to be missed when visiting South Dakota winding along the byway you will see wildlife, scenic vistas and develop a love of the land.

Big Stone Island is a wilderness area in the Big Stone Lake Area you can only get to the island by boat or canoe. You will find a hundred acre island that has been visited for centuries. You will be able to wander the shores of the island and it will take you to a simpler time.

If you looking for a less traveled area to explore and spend a little down time you will want to visit Custer State Park. This park is just outside of the Black Hills so if you have always wanted to see Mount Rushmore it is just a quick trip.

Custer State Park offers the Needles Highway for viewing the geography and Wildlife Loop Road for viewing buffalo, antelope, mountain goat and other wildlife found in the area. You can hike the area on many of the hiking trails and take in the clean air beautiful terrain and recharge your batteries.

While you are seeking an adventure above ground there are geological wonders below ground as well. South Dakota has two underground caves that are worth visiting. The Jewel Cave that is famous for its calcite deposits, when I first saw these as a kid I thought they had to be diamonds. The Wind Cave is huge with hundred and ten miles of cave to explore. The area above the Wind Cave is full of ponderosa pine, mixed with prairie grass and the elk and the buffalo love this area.

The locals and people who live in the Midwest have a favorite place its called Lewis and Clark Recreation area. The area is famous for it’s sandy beaches, beautiful lake, boating, water skiing and known as a great place to get outdoors and enjoy yourself. When traveling in South Dakota you feel the open spaces, enjoy the wildlife an find adventure around every turn. The time to get back into shape is before you hit the fields. Your body and your dog will thank you. Both of you will have a better hunting experience because of it.

Named after both the Dakota and Lakota Native American tribes, South Dakota (and its northern neighbor North Dakota) both became states on the same day: November 2, 1889. Known primarily as the home of Mount Rushmore, South Dakota is a great place for lovers of the great outdoors to enjoy a vacation among the Black Hills. Also remembered as one of the six states that made up the Frontier Strip, this northwestern state has a lot of history as well as nature to enjoy within its boundaries. Romantic destinations in South Dakota can be as adventurous or as relaxing as you want it to be.

One area that is sure to be filled with both adventure and romance is the area surrounding Badlands National Park, in the wide open South Dakota plains. This National Park area includes some of the most beautiful scenery in the western part of South Dakota, and it is less than two hours by car to Mount Rushmore from the park location. Also nearby are the Prairie Homestead National Historic Site and the Minute Man Missile Historic Site, both just a short drive from the National Park. One nearby town is the town of Philip, South Dakota – which is also home to several bed and breakfasts and inns.

The Triangle Ranch Bed and Breakfast is a 100 year old cattle ranch that was built in 1903. Named for the brand that was applied to horse and cattle by the original owner, this ranch now stands as a place of tranquility and peace among the western atmosphere of South Dakota. Romantic destinations in South Dakota that take place here are sure to bring out the cowboy (or cowgirl) in you, as well as bring a couple closer together. The Ranch is near to the Badlands National Park, as well as the Missouri River and the Black Hills – so you can see all of the sights of South Dakota while staying in one central location. The area surrounding this b and b is also perfect for hunting, an activity that can be enjoyed singularly or as a couple.

There are four guest rooms available at the Triangle Ranch, and one “Cowboy Guest Cottage”. Each room is distinctly decorated, but all accommodations have a western feel. All rooms include private baths, and a delicious home cooked breakfast at “Grandma’s Table” each morning. If you are looking to add a special touch to your stay here at the Ranch, there are several special packages to enhance your romantic stay. The Anniversary package includes such delights as chocolates, champagne and fresh flowers in your room, as well as a candlelight dinner for one night of your two night special stay.

The South Dakota laws that direct how custody works in the state are found in Chapter 25-4 of the South Dakota Codified Laws. Within these laws, parents can find the necessary guidelines for creating an implementing a custody and visitation schedule. Since the custody schedule is such an important result of the custody proceeding, parents want to do everything they can to make sure that the court will accept it.

Chapter 25-4-45 makes it very clear that the state has no preference for either parent regarding custody. The mother and father both have an equal chance to be the custodial parent. Thus, when a parent shows the custody schedule to the court, there need to be valid reasons why that schedule is the best one for the child. The court will want to know how they schedule fulfills the child’s needs, promotes the child’s welfare, etc. The best interest of the child. Chapter 25-4-45 also explains that all custody matters must be settled in a way that benefits the child. Everything in the visitation schedule should be in the child’s best moral, mental, and physical best interest. Parents should think about what their child needs and make the schedule accordingly.

The law specifies that as a child gets older, the child has more say in the custody and visitation schedule. The court will listen to the opinions and desires of a child regarding custody matters, and more weight is given to a more mature child. Parents can seek the opinion of the children when making the schedule. They should consider their children’s wishes as they make the schedule and they should talk to them about why they are putting certain things in the schedule, especially if they aren’t following the child’s wishes.

Factors that influence who gets custody. Chapter 25-4-45.5 and 45.6 contain some of the factors that the court does and does not consider when deciding which parent gets custody and how the parents will work out visitation. If a parent has been convicted of domestic abuse or other crimes, that parent may not be awarded any visitation in the agreement. There is the possibility for supervised visitation if a parent shows that they want to change. If a parent has been convicted of the death of the other parent they will also not receive visitation or custody.

One of the greatest attractions of the Black Hills of South Dakota has to be Mount Rushmore National Memorial, 23 miles southwest of Rapid City. Completed in 1941, and ranked right up with the National Flag and the Statue of Liberty as inspiring symbols of America’s Democracy. The four faces of the most impressive of our Nation’s presidents, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt and George Washington, are carved out of solid granite, and stand 5,500 feet above sea level. Each head is as tall as a six story building, and appear just about lifelike in the sun.

This wonderful memorial isn’t the only attraction that the Black Hills has to offer. There are many different attractions, with the Crazy Horse Monument right next to these presidents, as well as many prehistoric findings and locations in the area. If you like being underground, there are numerous caves in the area that are open to the public. Try the Black Hills Caverns, one of the greatest real crystal caves in the area, offers and abundance of different formations, from Logo-mites, stalactites and stalagmites, and even frost crystal formations, this is a site that can’t be missed.

The best place to stay in the Black Hills, that is a great base camp from where all attractions are the closest, it Rapid City. There hotels, lodges, as many campgrounds and RV parks to stay while you are visiting the area. If you want to journey back in time, a visit to Mammoth Site, in Hot Springs, where there have been more than 58 mammoths uncovered here. Totally indoors, this site is a real working paleontological site, as well as a museum. The Black Hills were also where the world renown T-Rex Sue was found, now on display at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.
